What is "Speculative and Forthcoming?"
Speculative fiction is the realm of science fiction and (sometimes) fantasy, where the author asks, "what if...?" about some unlikely subject...and then takes us on a ride into unknown territory.
Forthcoming is the industry term for "books coming out later this year."
As a librarian, I'm lucky enough to subscribe to NetGalley where publishers will email a pre-publication e-galley of a book slated to release later in the year. Sometimes I read them and say, meh... Sometimes I'm really impressed!
I'd like this blog to be a voice for those pre-pub "coming soon" titles that are in the great find department.
Great find number one:
The Age of Miracles, by Karen Thompson Walker
Release date: June 26, 2012
Publisher: Random House Publishing
I just started this one, and so far, two thumbs way up.
Here's the hook, "On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia and her family awake to discover, along with the rest of the world, that the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow."
What follows is Julia's view of her California school and town as everyone tries to carry on like nothing's happening even though families are moving out, days are getting longer and hotter, and basic services like the energy grid are compromised.
What's intriguing to me is the parallel (speeded up, of course) between a catastrophic event like this and the slower real-world catastrophe of global warming.
So far it's kept me reading way past bedtime...I'll let you know what I think when I get to the end!
For an insider view of the publishing industry, take a look at Lynn Henry, Publishing Director for Doubleday Canada, who tells us how she came to acquire Karen Thompson-Walker's debut novel, The Age of Miracles and why it is so exciting.
Look for this book in JUNE, 2012!
