The Civic Center Library participated in the Great California Shake Out earthquake drill.  Civic Center staff modeled the correct way to stay safe during an earthquake.

  • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
  • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

Safety experts no longer advise trying to stand in a doorway.  Most people are likely to be hurt by falling objects and debris than a total building collapse.

Later that day several earthquakes were felt in the Bay Area and scientists predict that there is a 99% chance of a major earthquake in the next 27 years.  So here is a list of items to include in your emergency kit to help your survive the first 72 hours of the next big earthquake developed by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management.
