Summer is here in Bolinas and if you can’t make it to the beach to enjoy the surf, you can always do it vicariously through books. The library has a good selection of fiction that revolves around surfing. Some of my favorites are Kem Nunn’s suspenseful novels and mysteries. A California writer, his novels have been described as "surf-noir" for their dark themes, political overtones and surf settings.  You can find them in our catalog.

Breath

Tim Winton, a noted Australian author published Breath in 2009. It is an engrossing read in which two teen aged boys become enthralled with a big wave surfer in a desolate part of Australia.

Don Winslow, author of Savages, just made into a movie, has also published several novels in the past using  the surfing scene as a background.  Two mysteries, Dawn Patrol, and Gentleman’s Hour feature PI and surfer Boone Daniels. In addition to these mysteries, Winton has also written The Winter of Frankie Machine, which features an ex surf bum and hit man who still tries to get in a quick set in on his longboard.

These are just a few of the choices that can be found by searching the catalog. So, if you make it to the beach or not, you can always be there in your mind.
