Raising backyard chickens has become very popular in Marin County in the past few years. Not only do chickens provide fresh eggs, they also help keep gardens free of insects and other pests. Furthermore, these birds are full of personality and make great pets.
Before you decide to set up a backyard flock, check whether or not your neighborhood has the appropriate zoning. The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources has a great web page on Backyard Chicken Resources, with phone numbers to call for information on local ordinances. Two other good websites with information on keeping backyard chickens are Sunset Magazine’s How to Raise Chickens, and The City Chicken. To read about one person’s experience raising chickens (and other farm animals) check out this year’s One Book One Marin selection: Farm City.
To find books in the library on raising chickens, look in the classic catalog under the subject heading Chickens.
