Through July 2012, stop in to experience the cities and peoples of the Mideast through the wonderful drawings and paintings of local artist John Torrey. Mr. Torrey has lived in and traveled extensively throughout the Middle East with his sketchbooks in hand. His colorful paintings and line drawings offer an insider's view of the region, and each piece of his art is accompanied by a vignette that allows the viewer to travel along with the artist. Here is the short description that accompanies "The Storyteller" (Line drawing of bearded man on yellow background above):

In 1968 I traveled to Morocco and visited the five imperial cities--Marrakech was my favorite because of its natural, unpretentious charm. In the Arab Quarter there is a central square called "Djema el fna," or "assembly of the dead" (a former place of execution). Here all manner of hucksters, snake charmers, pick pockets, and magicians ply their trade. My favorite was "The Storyteller" who told stories of famous highs and trips into his fantasy world.

Please come have a look--we'd love to see you! Get some art into your life!

Note: The Fairfax meeting room is open to the public during regular library hours. Please check out the Fairfax branch page/Calendar of events for times when the room may be in use.
