This month we are honoring the contributions and achievements of people of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage in the United States. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
Today the Marin County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution proclaiming Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and condemning anti-Asian racism and xenophobia resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
