The upcoming Newbery announcement on Jan 28, 2019 is a wonderful opportunity to power up reading for tweens. Tap into the buzz of suggested reads from hundreds of children’s books published this year. The Corte Madera library is offering a Mock Newbery Guess challenge and librarians are visiting local schools to make book talks in the next few weeks. Be forewarned: you may get a request to head to the library soon!
What is the Newbery?
The John Newbery Medal is the annual award given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature. It is one of the Youth Media Awards (YMA) presented by the American Library Association at their national conference each year.
- Author must be a resident of the United States
- Book can be fiction or nonfiction
- Book must be published in 2018
- Text only (illustrations or images are considered for the Caldecott Medal)
The Mock Newbery consists of predictions or suggested hopefuls for which author/book will win the medal.
Ask your tween for his or her favorites of 2018, then drop by the Corte Madera library to fill out a ballot for each guess. Ballots must be submitted by 5:00 pm on January 27. Five winners with the correct guess will receive a $20 gift certificate to Book Passage bookstore (courtesy of The Friends of The Corte Madera Library).
If your child does not have a favorite book published this year, suggest a visit to your local branch for recommendations today. The holiday break is the perfect time to cozy up with a wonderful read!
