Interview with Regina Jimenez
Regina was born in Mexico and moved to Bolinas when she was 1 ½ years old. She likes playing soccer, singing and dancing and she is looking forward to this school year as a 5th grader and is excited to improve her writing skills.
What are you reading this summer?
Lots of historical fiction, and history books, but mostly graphic novels and chapter books. Wings of Fire, opens a new window (Tui T Sutherland), Babysitters Club Series, and I read Dogman (Dav Pilkey) to my little sister.
Do you like to read paper or ebooks? Audio books?
Mostly paper because it’s easier.
Do you have a favorite genre?
Historical fiction and graphic novels.
What was your reading experience as a younger child? A favorite book you used to read or be read to? Any first memories with books you want to share?
When my mom got cancer she read me this book about a girl whose mom got cancer too. In the book the mom sadly passed away from it and her daughter tried so much to, like, get over it and not think about it too much and I felt like I had a connection with this girl since my mom had cancer too…but I am glad my mom got better. I think one of the teachers at the school recommended the book to my mom so she could read it with me.
And when I was younger, I remember looking at lots of picture books and speaking out loud making up my own story based on the pictures.
And I loved Fantasy!
If you could leap into a book and become a part of a story, which one would it be?
Smile (Raina Telgemeier), is one book I would like to be in because it is showing a girl going into the next step of her life and I would be by her side to experience the same things. I would not be myself though, I would be one of the characters, one of her friends.
What book would you recommend to a friend?
Any book that makes you feel happy when you feel sad, especially picture books and graphic novels in general.
When and where do you like to read? Describe your ideal reading experience.
In a corner with a blanket and pillows, I would set it up all cozy, it would be silent with cozy clothing and sit there and enjoy the quietness…maybe with some potato chips.
Why read?
I think reading is a way to help kids improve their skills in reading and writing. For me, it’s been difficult to write and spell but reading helps improve my writing skills, I remember a word that I read in the book and can go back and look at how it was spelled.
Also I think reading is really fun and when you’re alone, you can just get into a good book… and…

What was your reading experience as a younger child? A favorite book you used to read or be read to? Any first memories with books you want to share?
When I was little, my favorite books were: Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies (Carolyn Crimi), The Big Book of Airplanes (DK Publishers), Winnie the Pooh (A. A. Milne), Elephant and Piggy (Mo Willems), and any book about dinosaurs. One year for Christmas I asked Santa for a real magic wand and I got a Harry Potter, opens a new window book instead.( J.K. Rowling) I was really disappointed, but after I read it, I really got into the series and I am now reading book 6.
If you could leap into a book and become a part of a story, which one would it be?
All of them!
What book would you recommend to a friend?
To a friend my age, I would say The Eyes of the Impossible by Dave Eggers. It is beautiful and funny. To a younger kid, like a first grader, I would recommend Dragon Masters by Tracy West.
When and where do you like to read? Describe your ideal reading experience.
I like to read in my bed at night or in the morning. And if it’s warm outside I enjoy reading outside in the sun. It is also pretty nice to just read on the bench in our house.
Why read?
Reading calms me down and helps me relax and it also helps me learn new words like “volatile,” from A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket). Also I love feeling like I’m being sucked into a new world.

I’ve been reading the Mysterious Benedict Society series (Trenton Lee Stewart). I’m on the last book now.
Do you like to read paper or ebooks? Audio Books?
I like paper and audio. I can listen to stories for hours and hours. Right now it’s Harry Potter , opens a new window(JK Rowling) and A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket) over and over and over. I find audio books by searching on the library app, Libby, opens a new window. I like to look around in the library too. My mom also brings home a lot of books.

Definitely fantasy. I also like graphic novels, like Ariol (Emmanuel Guibert).

J.K. Rowling , opens a new window

I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 (Lauren Tarhis), which is a part of the I Survived series.
What’s next?
Maybe another I Survived book like I Survived the Shark Attacks.
Do you like to read paper or ebooks? Audio books?
Paper
Do you have a favorite genre?
I think historical fiction mostly.
What was your reading experience as a younger child? A favorite book you used to read or be read to? Any first memories with books you want to share?
I read the Elephant and Piggie (Mo Willems) books probably at school, and I learned how to read with those books. I remember Should I Share My Ice Cream?. My brother learned how to share after reading that book.
If you could meet a famous author who would it be?
I would meet Dav Pilkey, opens a new window because his books are so cool. You think they are these two real kids telling the story but it’s actually all made up. Like in Captain Underpants, the two kids tell the story how they make fun of the principal who turns into Captain Underpants.
If you could leap into a book and become a part of a story, which one would it be?
A soccer book so I could play soccer… or a book about basketball. I would be on a winning team with Kobe Bryant, opens a new window and I would be myself.
What book would you recommend to a friend?
I would recommend the Big Nate (Lincoln Pierce) series to Nicholas because I think he would like that series and more Elephant and Piggie books for my younger brother.
When and where do you like to read? Describe your ideal reading experience.
In my bedroom on my bed at night with a flashlight.
Why read?
Because it’s cool and it’s a really good time to spend and when you are a kid it will help you for when you grow up older.
