Lunar New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world’s population and is a time to welcome good fortune, renewal, and fresh beginnings. Traditions often include family gatherings, special foods, storytelling, and festive decorations meant to invite luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
Also known as the Spring Festival in China, Lunar New Year is celebrated across many East and Southeast Asian cultures, including China, Korea, and Vietnam. Each year is associated with one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, symbolizing different traits and energies that shape the year ahead.
Whether you’re continuing a tradition or learning about Lunar New Year for the first time, the library offers events, books, and digital resources to help you explore the holiday’s history, meaning, and celebrations.
The Year of the Horse
This Lunar New Year marks the Year of the Horse, a zodiac sign associated with energy, independence, and forward movement. In Chinese culture, the Horse symbolizes strength, optimism, and a free spirit. Horse years are often seen as times of progress, curiosity, and taking confident steps toward new goals.
According to legend, the order of the zodiac animals was determined by the order in which they arrived at a gathering hosted by the Jade Emperor. Each animal’s placement reflects its character and role in the zodiac cycle. Check out this National Geographic Kids article that tells you more about your own zodiac animal for your birth year.
