Marin County, CA – On April 14, the Marin County Youth Poet Laureate Anaya Ertz took the mic at the Board of Supervisors meeting to read original work, and the Board subsequently declared National Library Week and National Library Workers’ Day, honoring the Marin County Free Library (MCFL), its staff, and the essential role the library plays in our community. The celebration runs April 19 through 25.
This year's theme is "Find Your Joy," and MCFL is taking that literally. Starting April 19, branches across the county will host Share Your Story spaces where patrons can write what the library means to them on heart-shaped Post-it notes and add them to community display boards. Can't make it in person? Submit your story with the library through the online submission page.
“Libraries don’t just serve communities; we are at the center of them,” said Lana Adlawan, Marin County’s Director of Library Services. “The Marin County Free Library has been of service for almost 100 years to our community, and that is joy on so many levels. This week we’re inviting everyone, of all ages, to share their stories with us and the wider community. We are a reflection of community, learning, exploration, and always the joy in service.”
Stories submitted next week will be adapted into short-form social media content published in the weeks that follow. The library's website and all digital channels will carry a dedicated campaign space throughout the week. Subscribe to the MCFL newsletters for a highlighted list of free services available to every cardholder, including services like LinkedIn Learning, Kanopy, and access passes to state parks and museums.
First observed in 1958, National Library Week serves as a reminder that libraries are vital hubs for education, connection, and discovery. Award-winning librarian, author, and new host of the children’s program “Reading Rainbow” Mychal Threets will serve as the American Library Association Honorary Chair of National Library Week this year, and MCFL is using this celebration as a reminder that the library is a community story that's still being written.
