March is National Reading Month, a time to celebrate the art of sharing stories and staying curios. This month-long celebration was created to inspire people of all ages to read every day and to recognize literacy as a foundation for lifelong learning.
National Reading Month is observed in March in honor of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to many as Dr. Seuss, who was born on March 2, 1904. His imaginative stories helped generations of children discover that reading can be playful, bold, and deeply meaningful. March 2 is also Read Across America Day, a nationwide effort that encourages schools, families, and communities to make reading part of daily life. This year, the Read Across America Theme is Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.
If you are looking for ways to participate this month, start by setting a small and realistic reading goal for yourself or your family. That might mean reading for twenty minutes each evening or finishing one book you have been meaning to pick up. For children, reading aloud together creates connection and builds confidence and tracking books and reading time makes it more fun. For teens and adults, joining a book club or discussing a recent read with a friend can deepen the experience. Check out these book clubs by your local library and if you don’t see one that’s right for you, ask your local library staff about starting your own!
Your local library makes it easy to explore new stories. Visit one of our branches to browse the shelves, ask staff for personalized recommendations, or attend a storytime or author event. You can also access thousands of ebooks and audiobooks through Libby and Hoopla, available anytime with your library card. If you prefer listening during a commute or while taking a walk, audiobooks offer another way to stay engaged with great storytelling.
National Reading Month is also a wonderful opportunity to explore voices and genres you may not usually choose. Try a memoir by a local author, a historical novel set in a place you have never visited, or a nonfiction title that teaches you something new. Reading widely helps us grow in empathy and understanding, which strengthens our community as a whole. At Marin County Free Library, we are proud to support that mission every day of the year.
This March, we invite you to make reading part of your routine. Stop by your nearest branch, explore our digital collections, and discover a story that stays with you long after the final page. Happy reading!
