What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is an annual challenge where writers from all over the world work towards writing a 50,000-word novel during November. Originating in the Bay Area in 1999 with just 21 participants, it has grown significantly over the years. In 2022, 413,295 writers signed up through the official website, with 51,670 reaching their goal. This included 21,326 young writers from diverse backgrounds.
How can the library help?
The library is committed to providing an inclusive, accessible space where everyone can pursue their creative goals. We offer a space to write with free Wi-Fi, reservable public computers, and even Chromebooks and hotspots available for checkout. Contact your local branch to learn more about how we can support you.
Additionally, the library's collection has a wealth of inspiration, featuring books from a wide range of voices and perspectives. We've put together lists for books on writing to help you in the writing process, as well as published NaNoWriMo Teen novels and published NaNoWriMo Adult novels. The Civic Center Library will also host weekly meet-ups throughout November for writers to collaborate, connect, and create together in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
- Write First, Edit Later: Focus on getting words down without worrying about quality. You have to throw perfectionism out the window, NaNoWriMo is about quantity, save editing for later.
- Create a Routine: Life does not stop, establishing a consistent writing schedule into your working life is a must if you want to succeed. Whether it’s early mornings or sacrificing Netflix nights, building a routine helps you stay disciplined and productive.
- Join a Writing Community: Get a friend to do it with or participate in an online NaNoWriMo group to share progress, get encouragement, and stay accountable. Camaraderie among writers can help you push beyond what you thought may be possible.
- Use Writing Sprints: Set a timer (15-25 minutes) and write as much as you can without stopping. This boosts productivity and can help break through writer's block.
NaNoWriMo is for everyone, and every story has value. Whether you’re writing from a new or underrepresented perspective, your voice matters. So, embrace the challenge and joy of National Novel Writing Month, and be part of a global movement of storytellers shaping the world!
