We first meet Rhys, a longtime recluse living way off the grid in the Pacific Northwest, when he’s confronted by his two grandchildren whom he hasn’t seen in five or so years. He’d
retreated to this rundown farm after a furious confrontation with his doctrinaire Evangelical Christian son-in-law Shane at their family's Thanksgiving dinner which included his ex-wife
and her husband. His daughter Bethany, Shane’s wife, had left a note for her neighbor to drop them off at his place. She "needed some space" from her marriage and has taken off to parts unknown. But Shane and his scary buddies from The Ramparts, a quasi military encampment, are determined to get them back. Rhys musters his courage and some old friends, encounters many challenges and violence, and reconnects with Bethany. He was indeed far gone from his old life as a newspaper reporter, husband, and father, but this epic journey truly brought him home. Touching and shot through with wit.
Margaret left her perfectly nice husband Ezra because it just wasn’t working for her. Neither he nor other family members understand why she took this radical step.. Now she lives with her two daughters in a small apartment. Gradually we discover her childhood trauma: her older brother quietly, repeatedly molested her when she was “asleep. She and Ezra coparent well and both have lovers, but what she endured without acknowledgement has affected her deeply. Her life seems functional on the surface, but underneath, insomnia, distrust and fear for her children hamper her constantly. Many well-drawn vignettes show how secrets can affect every aspect of family life.
