The Third Wife

Adrian is a charming fellow. He’s produced five children by his two previous wives. Now he’s on to his third, young Maya, yet the families still get together cordially, even for extended holidays. What a sweet scenario, until Maya dies under a bus and Adrian, who’s never lived alone, feels miserable and lost. The apparently seamless scene starts to show significant cracks, especially when wife #2 acquires a boyfriend. As the story unfolds, we discover Maya’s many sources of misery. She can’t get pregnant, she’s treated like a nanny by those other wives, and she feels very second-class. She starts getting poison pen letters addressed to “Dear Bitch.” Who among the extensive cast of characters could it be? Jewell is known for her excellent psychological thrillers, and this one is a fine example.

Nightwatching

Nothing is as scary as being alone with two children in a creaky old house during a snowstorm and sensing someone’s there. Indeed, it’s a very shadowy, menacing figure who seems to know a lot about the family. The mother can hear footsteps and a voice. Her desperate plan is to hide the kids in a secret cupboard, sneak out, and get help. This she manages, but the aftermath is just as nightmarish. The police can’t find any tracks in the snow or signs of a break in. Was there really an intruder or is she crazy? She must convince the authorities it actually happened despite the lack of evidence. There’s considerable suspense until the slam-bang ending...

Little Secrets

One more in this freight train of creepy thrillers. When two-year-old Sebastian disappears, his mother Marin’s rewarding life falls to pieces. She and her husband Derek have done very well; she’s in the salon business, he's an entrepreneur. The official search comes to nought, but when Marin hires a PI, he discovers Derek’s been unfaithful. Marin goes after his mistress, young Kenzie, and things get very tangled as more dirty business is revealed from many corners. A twisty plot with lots of surprises, and I couldn’t put it down.

Haunt Sweet Home

Young Mara, down on her luck, needs a place to live and job. Her successful cousin Jeremy who directs a reality TV show that melds renovation and ghosts hires her for the night shift crew. She does surprisingly well, creating surreptitious special effects, especially when Jo joins her. Who is this Jo? Pinsker, known primarily for writing science fiction, brings in supernatural happenings that add an unexpected dimension. She has fun with the absurdity of concocted TV but also helps Mara get in touch with her true self
