How to End A Story

This extraordinary Australian writer is a faithful diarist, and in 800+ pages, we get her entries from ’78 to ’97. Initially they reflect just about everything that she observes, both out there and inside her very candid thought-processes. Towards the end, they focus primarily on her 12- year marriage to another writer—a built-in recipe for heartbreak. Her descriptions of nature are jaw-dropping, as are her wry reflections on people’s interactions, including her own shortcomings. I fell under Helen ’s spell for a whole week and want to be her best friend. Dip in and out, or gobble it up as I did, and you’ll be surprised by joy.

She Didn't See It Coming

All seems well with Sam and Bryden, a lovely well-fixed couple. But when Bryden doesn’t pick up their 3-year-old daughter, Clara, from daycare, alarm spreads. As the case unfolds, things unravel fast, and covert relationships are revealed. At one point, there could be at least 5 suspects who might have killed her. Lapena can twist a plot with derring-do, and I was caught in delicious suspense. Especially fascinating: inherent pathology in some characters even if they didn’t do the deed.
