Alligator Tears

In Orlando, Gomez grew up queer in a poor immigrant family. In this memoir, Gomez manages to get to college but ends up selling flip-flops to tourists, and at night escapes with like-minded friends to a club where they can let out their true identities. Sex work brings in more money and performing in drag offers an outlet. Eventually he moves to New York, and writes his first book, High Risk Homosexual. Gomez shares his experiences feeling his way into relationships, making peace with family members, and negotiating the considerable challenges that come with the territory. Candid and eloquent.

Underland

This amazing nonfiction book is subtitled A Deep Time Journey, and what an epic journey it is: historical, geographical, scientific, and adventurous elements pull us underground, into caves, abysses, into the water, and up into the mountains. McFarlane delivers exquisite landscapes, well-drawn companions, perilous treks, and underneath it all, deep concern over what we’re doing to the planet. Rich material, sometimes overwhelming to me, but so worth it.
