In the mid ‘80s in LA, young Steve watches his parents and their friends whoop it up in their swimming pool, over and over. But when his dad, a popular college teacher, doesn’t get tenure, everything falls apart and his father takes off for parts unknown. Twenty years later, Steve embarks on a quest to find out what happened and why. Mean, jealous colleagues and his father’s closeted bisexuality were significant factors. Steve’s painstaking, often painful journey helps him zero in on why his own life has been so unmoored. Haunting.
Clutching a bag stuffed with cash, Ann and Richard flee to a South Pacific atoll. She’s a high-powered lawyer, he’s part-owner of a restaurant, but creditors are closing in so they take what’s left of the money and run. At an isolated resort, a strange cast of characters awaits, including a rock star on the rocks. Atomic testing has brought about terrible effects on the populace. (Some paradise…). A native named Cooked (his name must be a play on Capt. Cook who discovered the territory) plans guerrilla action but it takes a surprising turn. I had to suspend disbelief periodically as things got over the top, but really enjoyed the wild ride and the snarky humor.
