To & Fro

A topsy-turvy book. The first half is folktale/fantasy, the second is contemporary with overlapping themes and characters. (When you finish the first half, you flip the book over and start from the back—clever.) Young Ani senses she has another self. When the Captain, a stabilizing figure in her village, summarily takes off, she ’s compelled to follow him. The quest leads her into many perilous adventures. Part two: young Annamae also senses another self. She’s an odd duck, has synesthesia, and refuses to finish her papers at school. A wonderful rabbi/therapist, Rav Harriett, explores deep matters with her. Lots of Jewish lore and philosophical questing with a light touch. Very short chapters that dance. Good medicine for these topsy-turvy times.

Rabbit Moon

A speeding car hits tall, beautiful red-haired Grace.  What was she doing on a deserted Shanghai street in the middle of the night, scantily clad? As the story unfolds, we meet her divorced parents who have been summonsed from NYC to retrieve her body. They thought she’d been teaching English in Beijing, not working as an escort in Shanghai. Back inNew York, her little sister Grace who was adopted from China is in a state of panic and misery. Many cross-cultural and interfamilial tangles emerge, richly explored. I fell deep into the story which spans continents and plumbs frustrations, disappointments, and desires. I really wanted a book to drop into and this one really filled the bill.
