Water experiment: How does water change shape when it fills different containers?

From September 10 - November 10, 2022, the Marin County Free Library invites you to join us on a StoryWalk.  A StoryWalk® is a fun, family-friendly, outdoor activity, where pages of a book are placed along a walking route. Each stop along the way displays one page of the book.

The featured book in most of our locations is Agua, Agüita / Water, Little Water by Jorge Argueta. This book tells the story of the water cycle from the perspective of one little droplet. The story is written in three languages: English, Spanish, and Nahuat.

One activity kids can try is this experiment:  how does water change shape when it fills different containers?  What's the smallest container it can fit in? The biggest?

What types of things can hold water?  A glass, a bottle, a pot, a bucket, a tub?  Your hands?  Can you think of anything smaller?  What happens to water when you pour it into different containers?   What happens when water gets very cold?  What is the biggest thing you've seen that had water in it?   Can you imagine something even bigger?

Un StoryWalk® es una actividad divertida, familiar y al aire libre, donde las páginas de un libro se colocan a lo largo de un sendero o ruta. Cada parada en el camino muestra una página del libro.

La mayoría de las rutas presentan el libro de Jorge Argueta Agua, Agüita / Water, Little Water, que cuenta la historia del ciclo del agua desde la perspectiva de una pequeña gota. La historia está escrita en tres idiomas: inglés, español y nahuat.

Experimento acuático: ¿Cómo cambia de forma el agua cuando llena diferentes recipientes?

¿Cuál es el recipiente más pequeño en el que cabe? ¿El más grande? ¿Qué tipo de cosas pueden contener agua? ¿Un vaso, una botella, una olla, un cubo, una bañera? ¿Tus manos? ¿Se te ocurre algo más pequeño? ¿Qué le ocurre al agua cuando la viertes en distintos recipientes? ¿Qué ocurre cuando el agua se enfría mucho? ¿Qué es lo más grande que has visto que tenga agua? ¿Puedes imaginar algo aún más grande?
