Award-winning Books of 2024

The weather is changing, the leaves are falling, and it’s getting darker earlier in the day. This can only mean one thing: book award season is here! If you’re on the hunt for some of the best books of the year, then look no further. We have compiled a list of award-winning books and nominees to make choosing your next read a little easier. Many of these titles are available from the library in multiple formats, including books, large print, audiobooks and eBooks.

Marin County Free Library has a variety of award-winning books on our shelves and online. We're excited to announce the 2024 National Book Award list of winners and nominees. Winners include James by Percival Everett for Best Fiction, Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling by De Leon, Jason for Best Nonfiction, Taiwan Travelogue by Shuangzi Yang for Best Translated Literature, and Kareem Between by Shifa Saltagi Safadi for Best Young People’s Literature.

We also have lists for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize and the 2024 Booker Prize, that include winners such as Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips and Orbital by Samantha Harvey.

Listen up, audiobook lovers, the Audio Publishers Association have released the 2024 Audie Award winners! The Audie Awards recognize distinction in audiobooks and spoken-word entertainment. This year Surrender, written and narrated by Bono, won Audiobook of the Year and Dion Graham won best non-fiction narrator for King: A Life, written by Jonathan Eig.

If you’re looking for some award-winning mystery books, Mystery Writers of America announced the 2024 Edgar Award Winners that include titles such as Flags on the Bayou by James Lee Burke as Best Novel and Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto as Best Paperback Original. Check out the entire list of award winners for more recommended mystery reads.

Every year, I look forward to learning more about the winners and nominees for the Ignyte Awards because the juries are comprised of 20 individuals; a mix of avid readers, reviewers, FIYAHCON staff, and winners from previous years. Finalists for the 2024 Igynte Awards include The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera as the winner for Best Outstanding Novel: Adult, and The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi as a winner for Best Outstanding Novella.

Lambda Literary announced the winners of the 36th Annual Lambda Literary Awards a few months ago. The 2024 Lammy Award Winners were selected by a panel of 80 literary professionals from more than 1,300 book submissions from over 300 publishers. Winners include Biography of X by Catherine Lacey for Best Lesbian Fiction and Family Meal by Bryan Washington for Best Gay Fiction.

Comic-Con has announced the winners of the 2024 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards aka the Eisner Awards. This year "The Kelpie" by Becky Cloonan, in Four Gathered on Christmas Eve won Best Short Story, and Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir by Pedro Martín won Best Publication for Kids.
