Award-winning Books

It’s time to pull out your favorite bookmarks because award season is in full swing! As days get shorter, it is the perfect time to look through the latest crop of award-winning books - they rarely disappoint. These lists also help you sample books that you may have never picked out for yourself.

Marin County Free Library has books available from this year’s Pulitzer Prize Awards, the National Book Awards, and the Booker Prize Nominees and include winners such as Trust by Hernan Diaz, Chain-gang All-stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, and The House of Doors by Twan Eng Tan

For those interested in mystery books, Mystery Writers of America announced the 2023 Edgar Award Winners that include titles such as Notes on An Execution by Danya Kukafka as Best Novel and Tell Me Everything: the Story of a Private Investigation by Erika Krouse as Best Fact Crime. Audio book lovers, listen up — the Audio Publishers Association have released the 2023 Audie Award winners! The Audie Awards recognize distinction in audiobooks and spoken-word entertainment. This year a few of the winners include Finding Me by Viola Davis who won Audiobook of the Year and Unprotected: A Memoir written and narrated by Billy Porter as the winner of the Autobiography/Memoir category.

Comic Con also announced the winners of the 2023 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards aka the Eisner Awards. This year Nightwing, by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo won Best Continuing Series and Public Domain. Volume One, Past Mistakes by Chip Zdarsky won Best New Series. I’m personally excited to read Ducks, Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton who won Best Graphic Memoir.

The Ignyte Awards began in 2020 alongside the inaugural FIYAHCON, a virtual convention centering the contributions and experiences of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) in Speculative Fiction. Finalists for the 2023 Igynte Awards include Siren Queen by Nghi Vo as a winner for Best Novel: Adult, and  Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore as a winner for Best Novel: Young Adult.

Earlier this year, Lambda Literary announced the winners of the 35th Annual Lambda Literary Awards. The 2023 Lammy Award Winners were selected by a panel of over 60 literary professionals from more than 1,300 book submissions from over 300 publishers. Winners include Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste as the winner of the Bisexual Fiction category, As She Appears by Shelley Wong as the winner of the Lesbian Poetry category, and High-Risk Homosexual: A Memoir by Edgar Gomez as the winner of the Gay Memoir/Biography category.

And for those of us who enjoy cooking (or eating!) Bon Appétit released the 23 Best Cookbooks of Spring 2023. The list features More Than Cake by Natasha Pickowicz, Tenderheart by Hetty Lui McKinnon, and The Everlasting Meal Cookbook by Tamar Adler.
