Furniture!

Fairfax Garden Project Update: October 12, 2022

One of our primary goals in creating the garden space is to provide areas for people to gather outside the walls of the library. We observed, during the months we were open for curbside-only service, numerous people who brought lawn chairs or blankets and sat outside, either reading a book or utilizing our free WiFi.

The Library garden will include four tables with chairs and umbrellas. Two of the tables have only three chairs, leaving room for a wheelchair to roll up and become part of the table’s conversation. Benches are positioned on the patio and in the garden, and picnic tables will be located under the library entrance overhang. The picnic tables will have one shorter bench, also providing space for a wheelchair.

The furniture arrived on September 30 in a very large truck!

Children leaving our outdoor storytime program were lucky enough to watch the truck backing into our lower parking lot, and a few of them got to watch the small Bobcat lift the pallets off the truck.

The legs of the benches are extra long so they can be embedded in the ground.

This new bench will not be the first place that people have sat upon this land. The Coast Miwok people lived here for thousands of years, stewarding the land and telling stories to their children. Once our garden is completed, we look forward to continuing a tradition of gathering outdoors, whether to read, tell stories, or just appreciate the surroundings.
