Celebrating National Library Week 2025

Libraries are for Everyone. National Library Week: April 6-12, 2025

It’s National Library Week and in today's world, the role of libraries fostering equity, inclusion, and community could not come at a better time. The history of National Library Week goes back to the 1950s, when the American Library Association and the National Book Committee created the idea to promote reading in an era where Americans were drawn to radio and television. How times have changed.

This year National Library Week is celebrated April 6-12, 2025, and is a time to recognize and appreciate the many ways that libraries help enhance, uplift, and unite communities. Throughout the week, libraries across the nation invite you to celebrate everything that we offer. Here at the Marin Free County Library, we have so much to offer beyond books and public computers. We offer programs that celebrate culture, lifelong learning, and community. We have artwork, museum passes, a telescope you can check out, and so much more! Come to your local branch to learn more.

Each day of the week highlights a different theme:

  • Monday, April 7: Right to Read Day, a day to celebrate the right and freedom to read whatever books we want. Libraries stand strong against censorship and book bans that have surged in recent years in our country. Take this day to read something that has been challenged.
  • Tuesday, April 8: National Library Workers Day, a day to honor and appreciate all the people that go into making libraries safe spaces for everyone to enjoy.
  • Wednesday, April 9: National Library Outreach Day celebrates the programs and people meeting the patrons where they are. At MCFL we have the Bookmobile, Learning Bus, and Library Beyond Walls.
  • Thursday, April 10 is Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to advocate support for your libraries.

Now is the perfect time to rediscover your library and experience firsthand the vital role it plays in our community. Your presence matters—come explore, connect, and be part of something bigger. We can’t wait to welcome you back!
