Seed Library
What is a Seed Library?
A seed library, or seed exchange, is a place to "check out" seeds for free to take home and plant in your garden or containers.
Everyone is welcome to check out seeds from our libraries! You are encouraged to save some seeds from your harvest to donate back to the seed library, but this is not required.
The goal of our seed libraries is to foster resilience, self-reliance, and a culture of sharing. Seed libraries also aim to promote biodiversity, local food production, and sustainable gardening.
Whether this is your first time or you’ve been gardening your whole life, this seed library is for you.
Happy planting!

Locations
You’ll find seed libraries at these MCFL branches:
- Civic Center Library
- Fairfax Library
- Marin City Library
- Novato Library
- Point Reyes Library
- South Novato Library
Look for the seed library rack or binder at these locations, or ask a library staff member.
Types of Seeds
We have many varieties of seeds, including Fruits and Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers, and California Natives. Seed selection varies seasonally and by location, depending on what has been donated to the Seed Library.
How to Check Out Seeds
Visit one of our branches listed above and take the packets of seeds you’re interested in. That’s it!
We ask that you limit the number of packets you take to ensure everyone has access to seeds. Look for signage to check the limit at your location - for example, 3 or 4 seed packets a month.
How to Donate Seeds
We welcome donations of seeds to the Seed Library! If your plants develop seeds of their own, please bring some back to the library to share with the community. You can donate back any leftover seeds or any new seeds from your harvest. Save only non-hybrid seeds (from heirloom or open-pollination varieties).
Steps:
- Make sure seeds are dry and sealed in an envelope or sandwich bag.
- Clearly label the envelope or bag with the exact name and variety of seed.
- Give the seeds to staff at the library service desk.
