Voter Information & Election Resources – November 2020

        by Ann October 29, 2020

Tuesday, November 3, 2020 - Presidential General Election

General Election: A final election for a political office with a limited list of candidates. The candidates in the general election are the people who won their party’s primary election. General elections happen at a local, state, and national level.

        Election Results:

Marin County Elections Department, opens a new window will deliver election returns on its enhanced election results webpage, opens a new window. (More information here, opens a new window.)

        • Results of Vote-by-Mail ballots will be available shortly after 8 pm on Tuesday, November 3.
        • Ballots cast at polling places during the Early Voting period will be included in the first posted results.

More Information About When & How Ballots Are Counted:

According to the Marin County Registrar of Votes, the Elections Department processes ballots as they are returned, either by mail or in drop boxes. After signature verification, envelopes are opened, and ballots are removed and unfolded so they are ready to run through the counting equipment.  (Assembly Bill 860 allows ballots for the November 3 election to be removed from envelopes and counted starting October 5.)

Ballots counted by Election Day will be part of the first results posted shortly after 8 pm on November 3.  Ballots received less than four days before the election, on Election Day, or in the grace period following the election will be counted after the election.  Ballots must be postmarked by November 3 and received by November 20 to be counted.  The ballot return envelope must be signed to avoid delays in processing.  The Elections Department will mail a letter to voters giving them the opportunity to fix a signature problem.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all active registered voters received a Ballot by Mail:

        • Ballots were mailed starting Monday, October 5 – 5-7 days expected for delivery (Postcard was mailed to all active registered voters - returning the card was optional/not required)
        • Ballot Drop Boxes available throughout the County – from Tuesday, October 6 through 8:00 pm on Tuesday, November 3

        More Information About What's New

        Everyone Votes By Mail

        • What To Know: to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and well-being of poll workers and voters, every active registered voter automatically received a ballot in the mail.

Voting by mail is free (postage paid), plus convenient and secure – by law, signatures on vote by mail return envelopes must be verified before the ballot may be counted.

        • What To Do: Please vote by mail to protect your health; avoid crowds and long lines at polling places. Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day (Tuesday, Nov 3) and received in the Elections Department by Friday, Nov 20.

If you prefer, you can hand-deliver your voted ballot to any ballot drop box, opens a new window between Tuesday, Oct 6 and Tuesday, Nov 3 at 8pm. (For more information about how to vote by mail, how your ballot is processed, how to mark your ballot, or how to replace a lost ballot, visit the County VotingByMail page, opens a new window.)

        Are You Registered?

        • What To Know: Vote by mail ballots automatically mailed to every active, registered voter.
        • What To Do: First, check that you are registered at My Voter Status, opens a new window on the California Secretary of State website, opens a new window. If your residence address is not correct or you are not registered, fill out a new registration form, opens a new window. Do this early to avoid delays getting your ballot in the mail. The deadline to register is Monday, Oct 19; after that date, registration options change (here is the link to Same Day / Conditional Voter Registration, opens a new window).

        Polling Places Have Changed!

        • What To Know: Because every active, registered voter will automatically receive a ballot in the mail and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, there will be much fewer polling places. However, polling places will be available for four days - Saturday, Oct 31 through Tuesday, Nov 3. Find your polling place, opens a new window.
        • What To Do: Please vote by mail to protect your health and to help reduce crowds and long lines at polling places. If you must vote in person, go early to avoid long lines and crowds. If it’s too late to return your ballot by mail, you may hand-deliver a voted ballot to any polling place before the polls close (at 8 pm on Tue Nov 3).  A list of all Marin County polling places, opens a new window has been posted, as well as a list of drop boxes, opens a new window.
